Swift Shopper App Review

For many of us we carry our iPad just about everywhere. Some of us even take our iPad with us shopping. And of course all of us take our iPhone with us everywhere. We found a recently released(March 28) new iPad app that does a wonderful job of scanning product barcodes and creating a copy of the barcode on your iOS device. The name of this app is called Swift Shopper. So when you go to checkout at the register you can heckout with your smartphone and scan the barcodes right off the screen. What this adds is convenience by having no need to physically remove any items out of your shopping basket, just hand the cashier your iPhone or iPad and a few swipes of iOS device later and you’re checked out!

I found this iOS app especially helpful at the Home Depot yesterday as I loaded up 75 lb bags or Quikcrete cement for a home project. It was such a breeze for both myself and the checkout attendant to process this transaction from my iPhone screen.

Here are a few tips from the App Store description:

- Maximize the brightness on your phone

- Hold the phone 4-6 inches away from the scanner

- Use a hand scanner instead of a bed scanner

New Eastern Europe for iPad

Today we are taking a look at an iPad app journal subscription called New Eastern Europe. This English language quarterly magazine for your iPad is a must have news source for those interested in the latest news stories from Central and Eastern Europe. The magazine provides readers with current events, political analysis, cultural and historical discussion as well as books and film reviews from and about the region.

Review:Beside Myself

Today we are reviewing an iPad app from the Entertainment category on the iTunes app store. This new iPad app was just released about 1 month ago by Jeff Gomez. This app is called Beside Myself and is actually an interactive novel that delves into some interesting and deep philosophical waters. This unique interactive novel explores decisions that we didn’t make and the paths that you didn’t go down.
This is a clever app concept and one that more authors should pursue. Jeff has designed the interactivity smartly so it compliments the written word of his novel. (video and screenshots below the break)

The contents of this novel can be shuffled and the chapters can be programmed like a playlist, or the reader can follow one Jeff at a time throughout the story. My favorite part of this app is that it allows you to start over and read the story again from the point of view of a one of the other Jeffs and with a different ending. We also like that as the novel unfolds there are emails from the characters to each other and the app allows you the ability to send an email to the characters in the story. There also photos, interactive menus, original music, and integration with social media within the novel itself.

Jeff Gomez is the author and he presents an interesting worldview where there are three different versions of himself but each one is different due to choices made at a critical juncture. One of the characters is married, one is single, and one has a family. As they each gradually discover the other, their various lives begin to overlap and, ultimately, become intertwined in ways they never thought possible. The three Jeffs also discover a shadowy underground society of people trapped in similar circumstances, along with a mysterious ringleader named Luther Blissett who seems to know all the answers.

More and more folks are realizing the importance of training the mind and exercising the brain like a muscle We found a great new iPad app for this that was just released a few days ago. The app is called CogniFit Brain Fitness for iPad and is a brain training app, although that is not a category on the iTunes app store(it will be one day).

With CogniFit Brain Fitness for iPad you will enjoy different games that are designed to challenge your mind and stretch your cognitive skills!   The developers of CogniFit claim that this app is scientifically validated to offer a personalized brain fitness training. We think this app for iPad is well thought out and designed really well. The user interface not only looks good on the iPad retina display with it’s clean graphics but we found it easy to get up and running once you open the app. We also found the navigation through the app to be intuitive and user friendly.

It’s Thanksgiving in the U.S. and many are traveling with a car load of children to visit family. We found a new app that will keep the animal lovers in the backseat entertained. This app is called “So You Want To Be A Vet?” and was developed by Kari S Trotsky Bell. This app is for kids of all ages who want to learn more about their favorite dogs and cats and other animals.

In this app you’ll find it feeds the curiosity of children who really want to learn more about dogs and cats. Who knows maybe one day they’ll choose to become a veterinarian because of the time spent playing and learning in the app.

We just found a much needed iPad app that integrates with your Facebook account. This app for iPad is called Facearound. This Facebook iPad App was cleverly designed by the developer to help you discover the best local places near your current location.

We found it easy to navigate in the app and the user interface is clean and user friendly. You can arrive at the Facearound portal directly by using your Facebook log-in credentials. Once you arrive at Facearound you will be able to write reviews about your favorite hot spots around town. For example next time you are at your favorite coffee shop, restaurant, dry cleaners … or any kind of local business you can leave your review.

With Facearound you’ll be able to rate these local establishment with stars. You can give a 1 to 5 star rating and also read reviews written by your Facebook’s friends or other Facebook users for that local business. This app seems to be getting traction with other iPad users and in the Facebook community as well so more and more reviews and local business ratings are appearing. We are reviewing today a new iPad app game that was just released on the iTunes app store on October 23, 2012. The developer is Wheiros and the app is called Bear Rescue HD. This game app offers fun for the whole family. This mind puzzle iPad app game has nice graphics that you’ll enjoy on your iPad tablet device.

The object of this game is to help the little bears find their way back to their basket. You’ll need to guide the bears through a range of obstacles which include avoiding the dreaded ducks and stinging bees. Mix 2 Color Children’s App

We found a cool educational app for iPad that was recently updated on the iTunes app store called Mix 2 Color. Mix 2 Color is an educational game that looks really good on your iPad display. The graphic design is clean bright and cheerful. The developers of this app have given thought to helping your child to develop their creativity in this app. The easy-to-use interface allows your child to easily comprehend how to interact with the app and play the games. This app captivates children with a tap of the screen where they will then play a game and learn to mix colors. With Mix 2 Color there are two different game modes “Draw a picture” and “Color a picture”. The ”Color a picture” mode offers your child up to 18 different coloring pictures to choose from. The object of this game mode is for you child to color them correctly which requires that they must use at least 15 different colors. However, only the five primary colors blue, red, yellow, white, black are directly available to choose from. The remaining 10 colors will be accomplished by your child learning to mix in order to create new colors from the primary ones.

The second mode is the”Draw a picture” game mode that offers your child free style drawing of anything they want. Tiny Owls for iPad Just Released

We found a fun iPad app game that was released yesterday on the iTunes App Store. The game is called Tiny Owls by the developer games2be. The Tiny Owls app for iPad comes in a free and paid version with the paid version offering you more levels of play. We found this game to be enjoyable for young children(4 and up) as well as adults.

One of the first things that will jump out to you when you first tap to open this game app is the exceptional graphics that are designed in 3D. The developers have put a lot of thought into making this app a pleasing experience for iPad user. The ease of navigation is a good feature which takes advantage of tilt controls and one-touch game play. There are over 60 levels in the paid version so you’ll have plenty of hours of immersive game play. (Video demo after the break)

The aim of the game is to find all the lost Tiny Owls and guide them safely to an exit.
The challenge in steering your baby owls is that their wings are fragile and will break if they touch the oncoming walls.

Live streaming of 2012 Olympics on NBC iPad Apps

The 2012 Olympics are only a few weeks away and there’s an app for that too. NBC Olympics Live Companion app will serve as a display for stats and other details so users have a full access of streaming live Olympic updates to watch alongside live TV coverage.

The NBC Olympics Live Extra app will serve up live-streaming video to on-the-go Olympic watchers and viewers can watch multiple camera angles in the London events. (video after the break)

The free iPad apps will launch on both Apple’s App Store for iOS devices and the Google Play Store for Android smartphone and tablets. They will also support “TV Everywhere” authentication with cable providers for unlimited access to all the premium content. Users simply need to login to their pay-TV subscription to tap into 3,500 hours of Olympic events.

The name of this new iPad app is called Piano Dust Buster which transforms piano practice into a fun experience. The developers have really hit a homerun with the design of this new app. When you first open the app you’ll immediately begin playing piano on this iPad app or you can use your actual piano to integrate in with real piano practice. We really like the graphics and the creative concept of when players play the correct note in this app the granny character hits it with her dust buster…thus the app name- Piano Dust Buster.

We think you’ll enjoy how the Piano Dust Buster app allows you to play the notes using an onscreen piano keyboard or you can play with your own piano. Germ Attack and Staff Master are the 2 game modes that turn piano practice into a fun game. In Germ Attack players play a note as it reaches a specific rhythm line. The note comes down over the key on the onscreen keyboard making it easy to see what to play. Points are earned and the Germ Attack tracks high scores and integrates with Game Center. Staff Master game mode is similar in that you still tap the germ notes as they hit the rhythm line but now the screen resembles sheet music. The notes no longer come down from the top of the screen above the keyboard. This game is for more advanced piano players and requires that they know where the notes are on the piano. Each song has a practice and performance option.

We really like this new iPad app and you can’t go wrong since it is free on the iTunes app store. We think this belongs in our best iPad apps category and enthusiastically recommend you download it right away.

To Do Checklist is a New Productivity App for iPad

If you are productivity junkie or just want to keep better track of all your “to do” list items we’ve found a new app by Braininstock that was just released on February 29th that we have for review. This app is called To Do Checklist and it is universal and work on iOS devices. I’ve been using the GTD method of keeping organized and clear minded in my daily work flow. This iPad app allows you to create different categories for your lists which I really like and is a must. You can set reminders for each of your tasks through the built in notification center.

The interface of the To Do Checklist app is clean and easy to navigate. The developers of this iPad app have done a nice job with including preset category lists as well as with a simple tap setting up your own customized new category list. Easily add contact information to your tasks with the integration of your address book built-in to this app.

The app is called Answer 2 Equations and we see this app being useful for students, parents and really anyone who want to learn and sharpen their math skills. This iPad app offers a no matter what your age this math app offers a challenging level of difficulty and has struck a balance between doing math and having fun in a game-like format. Answer 2 Equations offers you robust math problems to solve using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The game is set up so that you have more than 60 total math cards to select from.(5 sets of cards numbered 1 thru 12. ). How this iPad Game App Works

The object of the Answer 2 Equations app is to use Arithmetic functions (+ – x /) to come up with Solutions that match the Answer Card. Each time you will be dealt a set of math cards that will be accompanied by an Answer Card. Choosing from the the dealt set of  cards, you must come up with equations that match the Answer Card number in order to advance in the game. If a solution cannot be found, then a new card is dealt and added to the original set. We think you’ll enjoy this app for iPad as it is stimulating and takes math and makes it fun in a game like interface.

Baby-Chef iPad App for Toddlers

This is our third installment in a series of app reviews from the developers at MyFirstApp.com. Today we’re looking at another educational iPad app game is called Baby-Chef. As with this developers other children’s apps this iPad game is useful in helping your child developmentally. Baby-Chef app helps develop fine motor skills and visual perception skills as they use touch interactions to create different meals from the main menu.The Baby-Chef app is developed with young children 2 plus year old. My young four year-old enjoyed selecting her own ingredients and creating different meals all own her easily just with tapping and dragging on her iPad 2 device. (screenshots below after the break)

HOW TO PLAY: At the main menu you see a display of 9 beautifully illustrated food type icons like a cake, hamburger, pizza or even ice cream. When you childs selects that category the next screen appears with all the ingredients listed graphically so your child can easily make decisions on what to include and exclude in their meal.

Review: The Pete and Sneakers Bath and Bedtime Show

We found a delightful and fun iPad app for children called Pete and Sneakers Bath and Bedtime Show. The developer and author of this interactive book app for children is Erin Davis. Erin is clearly a mother who understands what children need and enjoy with this well thought-out iPad app. I think you and your young children will love these two interesting penguins who are not short on personality. The graphics are eye-popping and the split-screen layout is great for two children to interact with.

If you think about it, in a child’s life bedtime and bath time are big events for the day. The author has brilliantly brought an important message to life with the Pete and Sneakers characters. These cute penguins encourage children to understand their own individuality and uniqueness and how similar tasks can be performed in different ways. For example, Pete prefers to approach basic bath and bedtime tasks more conservatively, while Sneakers’ routine is free-spirited and often just wacky. Pete and Sneakers embrace their differences while still having fun together which is such a positive lesson.

My 3 and 5 year old are able to enjoy playing this together which is such a joy. This iPad app has been designed with some great interactive features like turning on a shower, a microphone voice recorder, and a rotating disco ball. There is also “read aloud” feature that can be turned off allowing children to develop their own reading skills.

The Pete and Sneakers Bath and Bedtime app is available until February 1st for just $0.99 on the app store.

Review: Noisepad iPad App

It was a big Christmas around my house this week with Apple products. The new iPad 2 tablet gifts were a hit with my wife and son. My son is a musician and he found this newly released iPad best app he’s been playing around with. This app is called Noisepad and is a very cool musician’s app for parties and live performances where you want to get the people on their feet with these beats.

The Noisepad iPad 2 app is a drum computer packed with the latest samples, beats and vocals from A-list artists and producers. The iPhonk developers(a devision of MediaGROE) have created an innovative easy-to-use app that has lots of bells and whistles. iPhonk has cleverly built realtime effects into this app that includes pitch, delay, cut-off, phase, reverb and bit-crush. You can also easily upload your own samples to the custom sound banks of the Noisepad app via iTunes. (video demo and screenshots after break)

The story behind the development of this app was with the upcoming artist Chuckie in mind. iPhonk created this app as a live set tool for on stage performance and have made it very user friendly for the live set environment. Below is a list of features list on the app store:

Review: PDF PROvider for iPad

Whether you just got a new iPad 2 over the holidays or you’re a grizzled iPad user, everyone is always looking for a better PDF reader. We’re really enjoying Dar-Soft’s PDF PROvider for iPad app. The Dar-Soft developers are experts in PDF apps for iPad. Now they’ve designed an advanced version of their popular PDF Printer app that has even more bells and whistles. This iPad app was just updated a few months back and should be one of the first downloads for all of you who get an iPad 2 gift this holiday season. (screenshots after the break)

PDF PROvider for iPad allows you to convert a wide array of file types on your iPad tablet. Now MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Keynote files, Pages, Numbers, HTML pages, Photos, Contacts and merging documents to Adobe PDF format with PDF PROvider. This has become my go-to app for reading all of my documents in one place.

I’ve really enjoyed being able to preview an HTML web page and then convert it to a PDF file and then save it to Dropbox. I now have a dropbox file folder filled with web research articles from the web all PDF ready whenever I need them. This was a smart design by the developer to create an internal web browser within the app to make converting web pages even easier. This iPad app allows you to sync your Dropbox documents with PDF PROvider content from the corresponding application tab to convert or merge documents easily.

Review: Shared Paper Lite

A new Pad app was released a few days ago that really makes the iPad a dazzling business tool. This new app is called Shared Paper Lite and is wonderful for making and sharing presentations. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that the iPad interface begs to be used in presentations. Steve Jobs knew that the iPad tablet would be in the classroom and the boardroom from the early design days. There are plenty of presentation style apps already on the app store but Shared Paper Lite really caught our eye for a number of reasons. One key difference is that this iPad app is more than a slide viewer presentation tool it is an editor also.

We think this app is going to have mass appeal because there is demand for an iPad app than can do some heavy lifting when making a presentation. I have a friend who is a big ticket corporate sales rep who loves his iPad and takes it on all the sales calls. However, he never fully integrates the iPad into his presentations because everything he needs is in multiple apps and on a legal pad. I showed Shared Paper Lite to him and he immediately saw the potential of using this app for a large part of his presentation. (screenshot and video demo after break)

We really like the designers concept of a zoomable canvas to write and draw on during presentations and meetings. A scale at the top of your iPad screen shows where you are in the expandable canvas of this app. They’ve done a nice job of including all the basic drawing tools with an easy interface to navigate with. This iPad app also allows you to add text, change colors, brush sizes, select and move and rotate any object as needed and even import and embed images.

But what I think is the silver bullet of this top iPad app is the ability to easily collaborate on the drawing canvas.
